Australia’s Healthy Weight Week

Australia’s Healthy Weight Week is all about focusing on getting the right advice and support for those looking to be a healthy weight. Why is obesity rising, especially in Ballarat? As we sit, discuss and expand on the list of possible reasons, our waistlines continue to expand.

Our humble city has ‘the second largest increase in any major urban area of adults who are overweight or obese with an 8.2 per cent jump for a total of 75.3 per cent’. That is 3/4 of our population who are overweight or obese! This has obvious implications on the quality of life for the majority of people, not to mention an economic burden on the health system. These shocking statistics were published in The Courier titled “Ballarat is getting fat and it’s happening fast”. So what do we need? We need accountability, education, motivation and action!

Australia’s Healthy Weight Week is from the 15th – 21st February and it aims to inspire Australians to make simple changes towards smart eating, starting with cooking at home and choosing the right portions. It is important for you and your family to be a healthy weight as it helps lower your risk of lifestyle-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer. Also, and very importantly, it will help you to feel your best and live life to the full.

Research shows that cooking at home is an effective way to keep your weight and health in check and subsequently your family’s. At home you control your ingredients and how much you plate up. And healthy home cooking can be quick, easy and cost-effective. Download the 2016 cookbook today here.
